OKURU NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent).

OKURU, February 3. Mr John Cowan is leaving for the north next week.

Mr 11. Brown arrives with the mail, and is to take charge of the Okuru School. The number of scholars has considerably diminished of late. A recent progressive sub-dividing scheme in the Haast A r alley launched by an Okuru resident has ended in failure. While the land in question is suitable for dairying, it is doubtful, owing to its remote position, if families would venture so far back, especially in face of the doubtful aspect of road development here. Further, the valley of the Haast is badly infested both day and night with mosquitos and flies, and would be almost uninhabitable in the summer. Recent road work was abandoned on this account.

There w*ere 13.75 inches of rain at Okuru during January, against 14.51 inches in the previous January.

A euchre tournament and dance were held this week in the Public Hall, but with a very limited attendance. Mrs E. James won the ladies’ first prize, with the unusual record of winning every game. Mr A. Cron won the gents’ first prize. Much interest is being awakened by the appearance of three export timber valuators and surveyors in this district. They are here to report on the available standing white pine suitable for immediate milling, and also on the possibilities of water power and shipping facilities. Considerable traffic is anticipated in the Haast Valley this stalking season. Mr Ted Cron is expected here shortly with Kokatahi farmer friends, and will remain for a lengthy holiday. Mr Smith and Mr Gray (Dunedin) commence a tour of the Haast Pass and South Westland next week.
