Wanganui is building up a doubtful reputation for petty thieving (remarks the Chronicle). A tally made, at the conclusion of the athletic meeting at Cook’s Gardens on a recent evening disclosed the fact that in the aggregate £lO was removed from the pockets of various competitors who had left their clothing in the pavilion. One athlete, who for some reason or other, had stamps to the value of £5 in his clothes, was relieved of the lot during his 15 minutes’ absence on the running track. An unfortunate feature of the thieving was the fact that a number of Han-era visitors were victimised. A crop of oats grown in the Amberley district has threshed out at the remarkably high figure of 92 bushels to the acre (states the Christchurch Press). The crop, however, was not a large one, being of only 14 acres; Good yields have been reported from other districts. It is believed that there will be many more extraordinarily heavy yields.

A well-known sportsman and prominently wealthy lawyer in Toronto. Canada, made a will in which there are some extraordinary requests. He left all his racing club stock to a bitter enemy of “the sport,” W. E. Raney, a former Attorney-General ot Ontario. To several prominent Protestant ministers and Temperance workers he bequeathed shares in breweries. The Orange Lodge is left shares in concerns which are managed by Roman Catholics. The executors of the will are two rival companies in which he was director and heavily interested. Should these terms tail to be carried out, the Toronto iam i I y which raises the most children during the next decade gets the lot. It remains to be seen whether Ihe professed principles of the bene-
ficiaries are strong enough to with stand the Jure of wealth.
