THE RIFT. ANTT-LLOYD GEORGE SECTION... (Reed. Feb. 12 at 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 11. The Liberal. Council has been formally constituted. Lord Gladstone, on rising to propose Lord Grey as President, received a tremendous ovation. Tlie Vice-Presidents include Lords Gladstone, Buckmaster. Sir Henry Lunn, Professor Gilbert Murray, and Hon. Mr
Runciman. , The Committee include Sir Donald Mac Lean, Mr Vivian Phillips, Mr Pringle, Lord Stanley, and Mr Alderley. Lord Grey, in his presidential speech, expressed the opinion that, while the British troops in China were used only to protect life, and not to enforce obsolete treaties, there was no complaint against the Government. WRIGHT AND HIS BOOK. LONDON, Feb. 11. “For an inadvertent sentence in an obscure book,” says Captain Peter Wright, “I am compelled to acquiesce to a torrent of public abuse, persecution, deprivation of livelihood, expulsion from my club, or wash a great deal of historical linen in public. If I played the part of laundryman it was thrust on me. Being a pessimist, I d< not expect justice on this earth, consequently I am not disappointed. I consider i have not been treated with a semblance of justice by most tribunals, social or legal. This undisguised flagrant illegality does not vex me. Constrained by hard necessity to use every available weapon of defence, I could not help violating the ordinary rules of delicacy and decorum, the profits of my book are under £40.”
