lands, the far East Cape country, the- garden-like Bay of Plenty or that almost sub-tropical North of Auckland, one cannot but marvel at the great, resistless march of settlement and at the wide variety of resoir°.es that are pouring out millions of pounds worth of exports per annum. To a stranger it is somewhat puzzling to understand what is keeping the' largest and greatest city in the Dominion going. , How is it, one asfe, that Auckland city is increasing- so rapidly? Why is it that over 130,000 people within a dozen miles radius, of the post office the suburbs are yet spreading out and. out, commercial buildings are going- up in almost every street, and the volume of trade grows with such rapidity? Why all this when, apparently, there is so little cultivated territory, . comparatively speaking : anywhere near the great centre?
