HOUSEHOLDERS' MEETING
(By Telegraph — Per Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 24. Healthy interest was shown in householders' meetings, in and around New Plymouth, although there were the usual grumblings about shortage of funds with which to carry out the work of committee's. ; The resolution from the Teachers 3 * Institute, favouring- a Dominion, scheme of promotion of teachers was carried in some cases, but in others was merely considered, being accompanied .by insufficient information on the subject.
The passengers toy the WhangareiKawakawa express, were amused % a few days, ago upon reaching Towai to see ovea\. fifty bags of mails for the far north dumped out on to the railway platform, to t>e carried the remainder of the journey by coach. It appears that three weeks are yet required to complete the period for which the contract, for mails by carriage, is taken, and the train is now. running to Kawakawa and further north ; so far, the mail matter, is ejected from, the, train at Towai and brought on by , coach. The position is. an extraordinary one, and savours of red-tape. The ordinary layman cannot grasp the fact that though the the train is 1 running to Kawakawa direct, the mail is ejected at Towai to /tonouiglit -on :bty icoach over twelve miles of bad road. Nevertheless, it is being done, and indicates that the Postal Dtpartment has not yet awakened to the- fact that the Towai-Kawakawa section is open for public rbu'sines's.w.--' ;*■.>; ... h* -
