Kowhai
The Alexander left Wellington yes terday for Grey via way ports and is due to-morrow. She sails the same night for Wanganui direct.
The Kaitoa leaves Picton to-day for Westport direct and Greymouth and is due to-morrow night.
The Waipori is ( due to-day and will load timber for Sydney*
The Holmdale is due to-night from Hokianga. She loads timber for Lyttelton.
The Ennerdale leaves Lyttelton today for Greymouth.
The Defender leaves Wellington to day for Greymouth, via Picton. She is due here oh Sunday.
Some 165,000 ft of rimu and kauri were brought to Wellington last Saturday afternoon by the Holmdale from Rawene (Hokianga).
So far thirty steamers have been engaged to load fruit in Tasmania tor the United Kingdom during the season, which will last from February 17 to June 15. It is expected that the export of apples and pears will be nearly 800,000 bushels.
The retirement of Captain J.. F. Ruthven, senior commander in the Orient Steam Navigation Co., Ltd, has just taken place. Captain Ruthven is retiring after forty three years at sea, of which thirty-one were spent with the Orient Co.
Just before the departure of the Government steamer , Hinemoa from .v\ ellington trouble arose (as previous Jy anticipated) amongst the crew in regard to the food supplied on the vessel. A conference between both parties was held, and it was promised that things would be put right on the Hinemoa's arrival at Auckland. Consequently on the vessel's arrival at Auckland on Tuesday, Captain Uoilons ordered new culinary utensiis, the condition of those now in use being- one of the men's grievances. A new oil stove was also order -d, so that the man on watch at night will be able to brew himself a pot of coffee or tea. The crew is apparently well pleased 1 with the altered conditions, and the whole trouble is now at an end.
