BRITAIN'S NEW GUN

The present British rifle being, generally conceded to be out of date, the Government small arms authorities have not been slow to find a new and greatly improved pattern. The new rirle, says a military correspondent, will be a quick loader rather than automatic, and the design will be such as to render the breech mechanism strong; enough to withstand the modern high velocity cartridge wnlch other nations have adopted. In the meantime a compromise ammunition has been devised to be used with the present Lee-Enfield rifle. It is proving a very good ammunition, but until a stronger rifle is adopted the full-power high velocity cartridge, with is low trajectory,, after the manner of the German •bpitze bullet, cannot be. used.
