FIRE ON A TRAIN.
(By Electric Telegraph -Copyright » MELBOURNE, April 18. A train conveying boats to the Bairhsdale llegatta. caught fire 1 and before it was extinguished three racing- boats were destroyed. Anticipation of the success of tarspraying certain of the city streets to help diminish the dust nuisance has been fully realised. In some of the streets, reports the Wellington City Engineer, the. tar coating is still in good order, but in others, subject to •the heaviest traffic, the same result has not been obtained; The conclusion came to is that it is advisable to construct road surfaces in flic busier streets with tar-ibound macadam, which -would enable . still .better results to be obtained with the tarspraying -machrEe. The streets sprayed have ben treated at an average cost cf between lid and I£d per sq. yard, which sum Includes the cost of purchasing the tar and applying the sarrTe, and also sweeping of the road surface. " It is stated that the late Chief Tarn ah au Mahupuku spent .£40,000 in eight years. He was regarded as a ' father by his people, who went to him for everything, and he rarely fail ed to respond to their requests.
