ILLUMINANTS AND THE EYES

According to scientists, the least injurious of present-day illuminants is the acetylene flame, for the reason that it is the nearest approach to we character of daylight. For reading or writing purposes the oil lamp or candle are by far the best, because of their soft, yellow light. Daylight, of course, is the ideal. It is a mixture of all colours, and, as far as the eyes are . concerned, the green yellowish rays predominate. It is the invisible and ultra-violet rays that are •so harmful, and in daylight there are not enough of these to hurt Oi the various . forms of electric hght, the violet is the most harmful.

It came out in evidence in a court case at Woodville, in which defendant was prosecuted for not eradicating blackberry, that at both Pongaroa and Pahiatua Horticultural Shows ifirst and second 1 prizes were .given for "blackberries grown in the district." In each case both the prizes were annexed by an exhibitor who gathered the prize berries on a roadside.
