FIRST DAY,
Ideal weather greeted the opening' day of the autmn meeting of the Grey Jockey Club yesterday, and the races were witnessed by a very fair crowd considering that the business people did not close The course ' looked a picture, and the appointments were excellent. The caretaker, Mr George, is to be complimented on the way he has kept the property in order. The lawns were beautifully mown, and the course all that could be de-' sired. The additions to the stands were much appreciated, and the committee deserve much praise . for bringing the course into line with the best in the dominion. The meeting was well conducted, nothing occurring to mar the pleasure of the day. The investments on the totalisntor were £3,755, or an increase of £1700 for the corresponding day last year. The racing, was of a very high standard, and was the best witnessed on the course for many years. The . different events brought good fields to the barrier, and there was an ab- " sence of the usual two or three horse race. 'Mr Angus Keith was successful in .getting the ifields well away, and in no case was there a bad. start. The following are the results: — TRIAL HANDICAP, of 50 soys, second horse to receive 10 soys from - the stake. 'Five furlongs. RiUtRIK, M* W. L. (Smith) 3 Also started: Ito. 10.0 (ißeg-bie). . Montague was the first to show out closely followed by rßurik and Ito. Montague led the field for four furlongs when Rurik assumed the lead. Miss Sylvia came on the outside and a neck "and neck'ero resulted in Rurik Graining the verdict by a short head. Time 1.4. PAIROA, HACK HANDICAP,^ of 50 sovs;> second horse to receive 10 soys from the staike. Five and ahalf furlongs. DIVORCE, Mr T. Cameron's br.g., 4vrs., 8.4 (Carroll) 1 UPROAR, Mr T. Stewart's 'b.g., 4 yrs., 6.7 (Mussen) 2 MANIAX Mr J. Colvin's eh. m., aged, 6.7 (Devine) 3 Also etarted: ' Featherstone, 8.0; Lady Shannon, 6.7. From a good start Divorce took command, with Uproar antl 'Mania in close attendance. On entering the . straight Uproar put in p. challenge, but Divorce had plenty in hand and won by a length. Time 1.11. GREY METROPOLITAN HANDICAP, of 100 ovs, second horse to receive 15 soys and the third horse 5s soys from the stake. One mile. THE CORNET, Mr (D. 1 (H. Roberts, ' br.g., 4yrs., 7.7 (Tait) 1 ABERRATION, Mr Alex. Prater's b.sr., aged, 9.4 (Langstone) 2 REDWING, Mr H. Davis' s eh.m., 5 yrs., 6.7 (Percival) 3 Also started: Gold Braid (Mussen) 8.13, King Try (Begbie) 8.9, Waiwareware (Murfitt) "8.8, Shannon Lass (Reid) 8.2, Wild Bird (Holmes) 7.5; Red Wing (Percival) 6.7. This was a splendid race with a field of eight. From a splendid start (Red Wing jumped to the front and made a hot pace. King Try wa's running well in second place, and at the six furlongs the (field closed, up. It looked as if all the Tiorses had a chance, and on entering the straight ' the ifield was bunched' with The Cornet slightly "in front. ,A great race took place in the straight and Aberration put in a bold challenge, but was unable to overtake The Cornet, who won by half a length, the others finishing in a bunch. Time 1.45. ELECTRIC HANDICAP, of 50 soys, the second horse to receive 10 ' sqvs out of the -stake. Four furlongs. MiSS SYLVIA, Mr H. Thompson's eh.m., 8.12 (Reid) : 1 L'AIGLON, Mr W. R. Simpson's •br.g., 4yrs., 6.7 (Musson) 2 SURMOUNT, Mr. P. Lomax, b.g., aged, 9.0 (Holmes) 3 -Also started: Conquestina (Emmerson) 8:5, Yeodel (Hack) 7.10, Moata (Percival) 7.7, The Norman (Beg.bie) 7.0, Millionaire (Griffin) 7.0. Conquestina after playing up at the post was left standing, the others being sent away in a bunch. Miss Sylvia went to the front and was never headed, L'Aiglon being- a good second. Time 52sec. WELTER HANDICAP, of 50 soys, second horse to receive 10 soys out of the stake. .Seven furlongs. NOiRTH POLE, Mr. P. 'From a good start iFirst View headed the field, closely followed by Hillspring. On entering the straight North Pole assumed the lead and won by a length, Pure ißose running into second place. Time 1.20. EASTER HANDICAP, of 50 soys, second horse to receive 10 soys out of the stake. Six furlongs. WILD BIRD, Messrs F. and A. Byrne's b.m., 5 yrs., 8.5 1 RURIK, Mr W. Mitchell's, b.g., . 4yrs., 9.12 ....: 2 SUPPLEMENT, Mr G. Murfitt's b.m., aged, 6.7 , 3 Also started: Montague (8.9), Nega. tive .(8.6) Mangrove (7.10). Mangrove was the first to hop out, closely followed by Wild Bird and Negative. '. At the turn Wild Bird took command, and Rurik put in a .great run missing the verdict by a short length. Time 1.17. COSBDEN HANDICAP, of 50 soys, second horse to 'receive 10 soys out of the stake. Four furlongs. YOEDEL, Mr F. Griff en's, b.g'., 4yrs., 7.10 1 DIVORCE, Mr T. Cameron's, b.g., 4yrs., 8.4 T. 2 CONQUEST/UNA , Mr . Overton' s eh.m., 5 yrs., 8.5. 3 Also started : Surmoutat (9.0), Balmy Breeze (8.8),. tßed Wing (7.12), Jessie Colleen >(7.2), Mania (7.0). This was a grand race throughout. •Tenhy- Colleen 1 took ■ charge for the first two furlongs when Yoedel came to the front. On entering* the straight the horses were bunched, and— the run home was most exciting, Yocdel winning' by half a length. The win was a. very popular one. Time olscc.
