LONDON, April 11

Mr Hobhouse, who has been much heckled • regarding- the nonpayment of income tax within the financial year by large railway companies, cabled on sth April, stated that the* chairman of the Board of Inland Revenue^ gave certain instructions to a subordinate who ' made a mistake in the course of executing them. Mr Hobhouse admitted that the responsibility must 'rest, as a last resort, upon himself, but added that any orders delaying- the collection were not given- by the Treasury.
