It MUed sixty ' of the men outright. The other 200 were entombed Later — The death roll at Throop was seventy-four. When the bodies 1 reached the pit mouth, undertakers fought, to secure corpses, hoping to obtain burial fees. There were disgraceful scenes until the police interfered. The death roll at the Banner mine disaster' exceeds a hundred all told, No bodies are recoverable because of blade damp. THe victims are mostly negro convicts. Fifty-five workers, who noticed black damp, dashed in the direction of the ;..shaft and were rescued in the nick of time
