» (Our Correspondent) . oince last writing: this district has experienced some welcome rainfalls, with the result that the mining industry has been benefitted and the miners are looking forward to a good clean up at Easter. On Monday last a farewell social was tendered by the residents to Miss Stuart, late matron of the Hospital- The function, which was held in the' Adelphi Theatre, proved a great success. •An accident; which might have proved more serious happened to Mr S. R Harris (the well 'known County Councillor) of Greenstone. He. was driving home with his son and daughter when the horse shied at some sacks of coal on the roadside, with the result that the- whole party were thrown, on to the road, Mr Harris sustaining severe bruises, the others" happily escaping unhurt Air Garner^ who was injured last week at the Otira, I am pleased to learn, as progressing favourably in the local hospital. At the.. Magistrate's Court on Wednesday the police charged the landlord of the Dundalb Hotel with supplying- liquor on Sunday. ' He was fined £3 and costs Yesterday Sir George Clifford and the other members of the Racing Commission inspected the; racecourse and then proceeded to Hokitika. During the. past few week's Mr Johnson (builder), with his staff of assistants, has been busily engaged in improving the grandstand and outside offices of the Racing Club, livery comfort for visitors has been supplied. The course is in grand order, and the lawn an emerald green. Everything indicates a most successful Easter meeting- on Monday and Tuesday next.
