SUMMER CANAL SCHEME.
Mr Cyrus Williams, the Lyttelton Haxibouor 'Board's engineer, submitted a report to a meeting of the Board on Mr Joshua Little's scheme to construct a small canal from Sumner to the Estuaxy near the Heathcote Bridge. The canal would have a depth of about fifteen feet and would accommodate light craft such as coastal boats and colliers. It could ibe extended and enlarged at will. The engineer stated that MiLittle's proposal was to cut a channel with a bottom of 30 feet inwards from 'the Sumner 'bar to the estuary near the Heathcote Bridge, to protect the entrance by means of a northern mole 3500 feet long- to excavate a turning' basin with ibottom dimensions 200 ft. Iby 200., and to construct two ">reast-work wharves each 100 feet long- at the head of the one for coal and one for timber ; the whole works to form part of a more comprehensive scheme The cost of this work would be £72,338. If the bottom width were increased from 30ft. to 70ft and the turning- basin made 500 ft. by 330 ft. the cost would be .£187,615.
