Johnstone, secretary of the boot- ■ trade council, resigned as a protest against the 1 recent wages board award, which allowed employment of women on sMrving machines. The Union claims that the work can be done by apprentices, and there is therefore no need to employ fem-'ale labour, and threatens to' call out employees of fLr-rns Avho persist in carrying the award into effect.
