MAGISTRATE'S COURT
At the Magistrate's Court yesterday before Mr AJ \Y. €rooke ' S.M., a lad of twelve, who was charged with' stealing" £o from a tent at Dunoliie was committed to an industrial school. ' For travelling- without a ticket ironi Jacksons to Grey, Alexander iJaird was yesterday fined £1 and 7s costs. v ■•■•..-. - - Another offender against the railway by-laws was D. Williams who was fined 10s for boarding a ' train while in motion. Dennis Connell charged with" riding a bicycle after dark with no' light on the machine was fined 7s and costs. ■ • G. Levien was charged with using- language calculated to provoke a breach of the peace in a public place, viz., the Chief Post Office towards an employee' named, A. .J. iraser. Mr Hannan, who appeared tor the defendant, raised the point mat the Post Office was not a' public place within the meaning* of the Act, and ( cited a case in which Mr Justice Denniston had pronounced that a railway platform was nof a puslic place but .which had since ueen included in the amended Act, but not a post-office. The Magistrate said he -must be Sound by Judge Denniston' s ruling (though it was not in accord with the aecision in an English case. Thereiore he dismissed the information;. :.- In the maintenance case of J: I Corkery Wingrove the Inspector said iitat the Education Department was willing" to forego the claim for arrears for the maintenance of his . children in 'the Industrial school, and the Magistrate remitted all claims up to date but intimated that detendant must pay from the present time. Several case? were adjourned till a later date. ;
