Owing- to the high bea running- on the bar all shipping movements on Saturday and Sunday were suspended.
The Kaitoa and Ng-ahere hawbeen lying in the roadstead since Saturday. As the sea is however showing- signs of moderating', it is hoped they will be able to enter on this morning's tide.
The Ngatoro is' due to-day from Auckland, and will -sail to-morrow for Welington.
The Arahura is due this morning, and is timed to sail on the return trip at 7 o'clock to-niglit.
The Kotuku on arrival to-day from Napier will load coal for Lyttelton.
The Kittawa is due on Wednesday from Lyttelton, via Wellington and Westport, and will load coal for Lyttelton.
The Poherua is also due on Wednesday and will load coal for Wellington.
Mr Lyon went south from Wellingon to rejoin the Defender as second mate.
The Wimmera, which (says a Press Association message) arrived at Auckland from Sydney on Sunda\ night after a stormy voyage, experienced what is described as the worst trip for years. On Thursday a good deal of water was shipped, but no damage was" done.
The work of towing the 'Auckland Harbour Board's -wrecked launch Kauka to shallow water at Devonport was proceded with early in the week. So far a quantity of copper, lead, and g-ear has been recoverd hy aid of a diver. It is not expected that anything further, »beyond the machinery will ! be worth recovering, the hull of the vessel being completely destroyed.
Captain Broia, of the French ship Noemi, which arrived at Newcastle from Monte Video on March 26th, had on his vessel a woman whose presence had caused him some trouble and embarrassment. The woman in question joined the shir> at Monte Video as an able-bodied seaman, being at the time disgnised as a man. It iappears that she and her husband signed on as members of the crew, and it was not until the vessel was two days out that., the skipper became aware of the .presence, of a ivoman in the forecastle. An intimation of this fact was. however, conveyed to the 1 captain by the woman's husband. -She was immediately removed from the men's quarters, and was provided with a cabin in anothei part of the ship. The disguise had been perfect, her hair having been cut short. /
A Brisbane Press message says thata lajT'gc quantity of Yongala wreckac" is ashore at Ramsay Bay, including a smashed lifeboat.
Captain H. Fnatherston has been appointed harbourmaster to the Waimakariri Harbour Board.
Greymouth is not the only port which occasionally suffers from temporary stoppage of shipping- movements. Welington sometimes gets a fog-as "thick; as porridge'^ which s:ops everything-. Here is one of ihem quoted from a Wellington paper. ' Owing to the heavy fog that pre••ailed outside all way yesterday, thft oastal steamer Ruru, which left por\ at an early hour yesterday morninfe for East Coast, was compelled ta anchor in Worser Bay until 8.10 a.m. to-day. She then resumed her voyage." The American barauentlne Kohala was exactly three weeks in port at Lyttelton, and she made a very creditable performance in discharging- her big cargo of over 1,000.000 feet of lumber. The actual time taken in discharging was 14 days 5 hours, an average of about 65,000 feet of lumber per day. The vessel worked wit her own crew and igear into railway wagigons, in which two shoTemen were receiving the slings. Much of the lumber was in very long! lengths, and a g-ood deal of sorting had to be done.
Consequent upon the appointment of Captain J. Maxwell as assistant- . Marine Superintendent for the Shaw, Savijl and Albion Company (resident at 'Auckland), some changes are about ro take place in regard to other commanders' of vessels in the company's fleet in th shrdlu cmfwyp cmf wypcm fleet. Captain Chudley, of the Kia Ora. will take command of the Pakeha ,and Captain J. iMacfie, of the Tokomaru, will transfer to' the Kia Ora. Captain Kelly, at present chief officer of the Rangatira, will be ap-pointe-i to the command of tihe Tokomaru.
