A wide area at the back of Cairns is submeregd to the depth of several feet. The flood waters are steadily receding. The damage to the railways is serious, and it will be two months before regular traffic is restored. In the meantime the "back country cannot get the . mails and food supplies, and arp threatened with a famine.
