ASCENT OF MITRE PEAKE
(By Telegraph — Per Press Association) ' WELLINGTON, April 7. A great Jmany people who have been to Mil ford Sound will b<= interested to know . that the first ascent of Mitre Peak was made recently by Mr J. 'R. Denniston, a .Canterbury climber, who has done a good deal o+ climbing- and exploration 1 in the Scutnern Alps. Mr Denniston commenced the ascent with one of the men employed on the overland track from T0 Anau to Milford Sound. The man, however, decided to stop when within 1200 feet from the top, so Mr Denniston went on alone, and succeeded in reaching the actual summit of. the peak. The rock, which was rough granite, was very firm— quite a contrast to the loose rock met with on the main range of the outhern Alps at Mount Cook. Mr Denniston used . rubber shoes near the summit, otherwise it would have been difficult for him to have made the climb alone. He, however, met with no serious difficulty. The tosh on the lower part of the journey was of the dense type usueally met with on the West Coast, .but was not so bad. as he' had : expected it to be.
