What is the matter with the v.:c rpora tion lamp at the corner of Tainui and; Puketahi streets? It has not been alight for some time, and its w:i;>t is felt of dark nights by wayfarers in that neighbourhood. (Curiously enough too, it is almost opposite the residence of the gas manager. A ratepayer ha £ drawn oiir attention to the ur'.'.'T through our columns, and tha* as soon as the lamp-lighter i; slits :hc lamp it soon after goes on*, lividently it wants attending to. An Arney stret resident hailed one of the u\rgus staff the other day by Snouting "They have not brought back' that lamp yet!" Arney strc-t' #corns to ibe rather (badly n -.var: of a.lamp on dark nights. At the meeting of the Hokitika Bor ough Council last night his Worship the Mayor was to move:—"That with tfle view of shortening the coach journey, and so lessening the time occupied in travelling between Otira and the Oass, the Government be urged to remove the Gtir,a railway station from- its present site -to a position about U- miles eastward and nearer the centre of the Otira population, and thereby expedite the necessary steamer connections and prevent the 24 hoursi loss of time which takes place under the present conditions to H.M. mails and the numerous passengers travelling between the Nor,rt Island and the West Coast."
There was a little sparring, by a couple of the members at the meeting of the Westland Charitable Aid Board on evening, (says the Guardian). When discusing the advisability of appointing, an Inspector of Public Health, a duty involving as a result of ithe intention of the Health Department to remove Inspector Middleton from Greymouth, and thereby throwing the responsibility on the local .Board, Mr Bock suggested that the. Secretary could do the -work and thereby save further expense.. Mr Murdoch twitted 'the speaker with having an eye on the coming municipal elections. Mr Bock retorted 'that the^ interjecter had not enough ibackbone ' to support him, stating that he (Mr 'Bock). would not be a candidate for municipal honors, but .that he was sim ply protecting the intersts of the. Borough ratepayers. This led the Chairman a little later to remark that the County bear the heavier portion of the expense, and he also passed some strictures on the insanitary condition of the town of Hokitika, using- this as a special -argument for the appointment of the inspector. Mr Murdoch supported the proposal and in the course of his remarks stated -..'lat it was urgently, necessary that among other duties there should be a =.net inspection of'dairies. He instanced the necessity by stating at one hotel where he stayed, the flics which vcie in abundance would rest anywhe-ye, even on the top of his head, but not on 'the butter which contained a preparation that killed them if they cMd .so. Asked why he did not draw attention to the matter he said that ; t was not his ditty to do so, all t.e :iul in the matter was to refrain from eating 'the 'butter." Alex.
