Lord Denman expressed hij pleasure at going; to Australia, and said he was conscious of the disadvantages oi ioiiowing- 'experienced predecessors, Diit he relied on the proverbial cordiality of the Australians. General HuTton, in moving- a vote or thanks To Captain Collins said tnat AusTralia.had reason to be proud of its military past. Sir Frederick Darley had pioneered the co-bpera-tive system of Empire defence when he sent the Australian contingent to the Soudan. . General Button also eulogised com pulsory service. Mr Ernest Shackleton appealed tor assistance for D'r Mawson's An- ■ tarctic expedition. ' '
