The object of the Art-Union of Glasgow is to aid in extending a knowledge of the Fine Aits, by distributing among its Members meritorious Works of Art. A subscription of One Guinea constitutes Membership for. One Year. The whole subscriptions, after deducting the necessary expenses, are devoted to the purchase of Paintings, Drawings, Sculptures, Engravings, and other Works of Art ; each member being entitled to the Presentation Work 'or the year of Subscription, and a share in the Annual Ballot of Prizes. Any member having paid his ordinary Subscription for the current year, and wishing to have additional Shares in the Ballot for Prizes -bat without another Copy of the Presentation Work— may have one additional Share for every Half-Guinea subscribed, for which a separate printed receipt will be given. The Presentation Work for this year is a Chromo-Lithograph, IS£ x 22£ inches, in the highest style of the Art, after the Painting "GLEANERS," By James Sant, R.A., which was in th e Glasgow Exhibition of 1874. This Painting was exhibited in the Fine Art Institute of Glasgow last year, and it may suffice with reference to its excellence to quote from the notice of the Exhibition in one of fihe local newspapers: — "This is a charming picture, and very characteristic of the painter. He is par excellence the painter of children. What could be more beautiful than the archness and simplicity of the girl looking up and out of the picture ? (Jould anything be more complete than the composition and pose of the picture? The forms are delicate, the expression refined, and the arrangement effective and simple." The Original Painting, the '* Gleaners," will form the First Prize and the other Prizes will consist of— - Sums set apart for the purchase of Paintings or Sculpture, each Prizeholder having the riuht to select the Work of Art to form his Prize from any Public Exhibition ; and Paintings, Engravings, and other Works of Art, as Minor Prizes, selected by the Committee. THE BALLOT, WILL TAKE PLACE IN FEBRUARY, 1876. Subscribers of Two Guineas— with a Share in the Ballot for Prizes for each Guineamay have, in their option, Two Copies of the (Jhromo-Lithograph, or, in lieu thereof, a selected -Proof Copy. , , ; '.
