THE POOR TEACHER.

[to the editor;] ■ Sir — I haye just read your leading article in this morning's issue as to the payment, to! be made to teachers in the rich Province of Westland. Toor Having treated the subject so ably, and shown the absurdity of the paltry contemplated remuneration proposed to be paid to teachers, make it unnecessary, fpr. me to say more on that head. . No man of any common sense can very well arrive at, any other opinion than that it is an iasnlt to the whole body of .teachers on the Coast to propose such miserable stipends. Why there is not a shoeblack to be got for. the amount. There is, however, a moral to be learned that it is to be hoped will nb£ be lost sight of at some future time, and perhaps the Central Board intend it to be 'applied to themselves as liberally as they are applying it to the poor teacher— that salaries that will barely keep body and soul together are quite sufficient for the Coast, and that their salaries will be, reduced in the same ratio.; I quite endorse your opinion that the Inspector is not to blame in the matter, and he knows as well as the public (the Central Board being omitted) that there will be , considerable difficulty in obtaining the "required number, of; competent, teachers, if they are to be found on the Coast, and that there is every probability of the proposed examination takes place, that these will be a great falling off. One thing the teachers can do, and that is decline the highly remunerative salaries proposed to be paid by a Central Board that does not appreciate knowledge, and let them bear in mind that teachers are better paid in any other part, and not likely to come here, Bq
