.Yesterday morning the s.s. St. Kilda was towed over the bar by the p.s. Dispatch. She is bound for Wanganui with a cargo of coal. The a.s. Otago is announced to leave here for Melbourne direct on Saturday morning. Captain Fox, late of the ships Forfarshire and Rangitika, and some ten years ago master, of the s.s. Star of the Evening, trading between Dnnedin and the West Coast, has been appointed to command the New Zealand Shipping Co's magnificent ship Waimate, which is expected to leave Lyttelton for London about the 10th inst. The Star of the West, Captain Day, of Plymouth, on a voyage from Liverpool to Iquique, put into Valparaiso on December 20th, and reports having fallen in with the New Lampedo, from Liverpool for Panama, which "was on fire. All the crew were taken on board the Star of the West, and landed at Valparaiso. The vessel also had on board the crew of an Italian barque, the Clothilde — which had been destroyed by fire while on a voyage from Cardiff to Valparaiso— who had been taken off the burning vessel by the Star of the West. The following telegram from Bowen, dated March 19, has been published in the South Australian Register :—" The Dawn has returned from the wreck of the Gothenburg. The diver found the after part of the ship from the main rigging 2ft under the deck aU parted. The screw and shaft had broken away. He found Judge Wearing's valise in the cabin, containing cards, handerchiefs, &c:, but no letters. He also found the ship's log, partially destroyed. It contained no account of the return trip. He saw the body of a woman in a berth, kneeling ; also two children, ,who had apparently died while asleep. In another berth, he found several other bodies. No valuable articles were found. The box of gold, which was previously recovered, is said to contain only 26000z.
