THE AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY CLUB AUTUMN MEETING.
[argus.] FIRST DA^. Sydney, Monday, March 29. The Autumn Meeting of the Australian Jockey Club commenced to-day, on the Randwick course, and there was a large attendance, including His Excellency the Governor, Lady Robinson, and suite. Several showers fell during the morning, ' but the weather on the whole was favor- ] able. The racing generally was good. Sir Hercules Robinson was most fortunate in being the principal winner of stakes. He ran first and second in the Champagne Stakes, won the Leger with Kingsborough, after a sharp tussle with Melbourne, ran third for the Doncaster Handicap, and carried off the Trial Stakes with his two-year-old colt Valentia. Diver secured an easy victory in the Cumberland Stakes, beating Reprieve and Goldsbrough, and Priam carried off the Doncaster Handicap. Hukdle Race, Mr T. Cornish's gr g Mount, aged ... 1 Fearnaught ... 2 Ulysses 3 The other starters were Commodore, Pheasant, Harlequin, Lady Power, and Barrister. Barrister took the lead at the start. Mount was the first at the hurdles, followed by Barrister and Commodore. Mount kept the lead to the finish, winning a good race from Fearnaught by half a length, Ulysses 30 lengths away. Time, smin3ls. The Cumberland Stakes, of 10 soys each, with 100 soys. added. Two miles. Mr Lloyd's br h The Diver, by Maribyrnong—Gwendoline 1 Mr R. Rouse's br h Reprieve, 6 yrs ... 2 Mr J. Tait's b h Goldsbrough, 4 yrs ... 3 Sir H. Robinson's bl f Neredah, 3 yrs ... 0 The above-named four were the only starters. Neredah made the running, followed by Reprieve, Goldsbrough, and Diver. This order was maintained until the trainers' stand was reached, when Diver Bhot through his horaea and won easily by six lengths, Reprieve next, with Goldsbrough and Neredah close together in the third and fourth places. Time, 3min 43s 6-10ths. Chajipagne Stakes— A sweepstakes of 20 soys each. For 2 year olds. Colts, Bst ; fillies, Bst slb. Five furlongs. Sir H. Robinson's b c Hyperion, by Lord of Lynne -Miss Pitsford ... .. 1 Sir H. Robinson's eh f Barbara, by Kingston—Young Culnare ... 2 Mr De Mestre'a br o Redwood, by Manuka I -—Spring Blossom ••• 3
Sylvia colt, the Brown Ducheas coir, Ringwoocl, Valetta, Valentia, New Holland, the Nightlight colt, Orisbe, and The Card, also started. The lot got away fairly together, with exception of the Sylvia colt left at tho post. Redwood, with Valetta, made the most of the running to the turn, where the latter was beaten, and Hyperion coming up on the inside won cleverly by a length. Barbara second, Redwood third ; then Valetta, New Holland, and The Card. Time, lmin ssec 2.loths. The A. J. C. St. Leger— A sweepstakes of 30 soys each, for three year olds. One mile and three quarters. Sir H. Eobinson's b c Kingsborough by Kingston— Sappho 1 Mr J. Tait's b c Melbourne, by Panic — Myth 2 Only two started, and the pair went away on even terms. Melbourne took up the running, and led to the last turn, where Kingsborough went to the front. Down the straight a good race took place, which resulted in Kingsborough winning by a neck. Time, 3min 18sec 4-10ths. Doncaster Handicap— Of 10 soys. each, with 100 soys. added. One mile. Mr J. Ross ns b h Priam, by New Warrior, 6 yrs, Sst 91b 1 Mr S. Harding's gr h Sweetbriar, 5 yrs, Sst4Lb 2 Sir H. Robinson's b h Fitz- Y"attendon, 4 yrs, Sst 101 b 3 Sterling, Lord Lyon, Wombo, Kingfisher, Misnomer, Llama, Express, Novice, and Adieu also started. At the start Adieu was left at the post. Priam was the first away, but soon gave way to Express, who led up the hill, with Wombo, Sweetbriar, Kingfisher, and Fitz-Yatten-don in close company. Sweetbriar led into the straight, but was headed by FitzYattendon soon after, and at a hundred yards from home, Priam came with a great rush and won by between two and three lengths, Sweetbriar second, and Fitz-Yattendon third. Time, 1m 47s 6-lOths-The Trial Stakes, of 5 soys each, with 50 soys added. One mile and a quarter. Sir H. Robinson's bl c Valentia, by Yattendon—Vanity 1 Mr T>\ Taylor's b f Miss Kingston ... 2 Mr D. Mayne's gr f Jacoca 3 Emigrant, Plover, New Warrior, Mephistopheles, Cynthia, The Card, and Ocyrde, also started. Plover, attended by The Card, led to the home turn, where Valentia and Miss Kingston came out, and after r a good race the former won by a length and a half. Time, 2m 20s 4-10ths. The Argus of the 31st March says : — " But very little is doing in betting circles just now, nearly all the bookmakers being at Sydney. The following are the latest Melbourne quotations for the Sydney Cup :— Haricot, 6 to 1; Imperial and Viva, 7 to 1 : Lurline, The Diver, and Melbourne, 10 to 1 ; Reprieve, Sterling, Priam, and M'Callum Mohr, 12 to 1. All others from 15 to 20 to ]." Their Sydney correspondent telegraphs from Sydney on Tuesday: — "Viva and Imperial had a good gallop this morning, and a few others worked. Haricot ia first favorite for the Cup at 100 to 15, and 100 to 12 against Imperial ; 100 to 10 each against Viva, Reprieve, Lurline, Diver, and Priam. I still like Viva best." Tuesday Evening: — " Viva has advanced in the betting, and is at 100 to 14 now. Imperial has receded.
