We have discovered that we were in error in stating yesterday that the rosolution of the County Council regarding the house allowance for Government officers had remained . a dead letter. We find that the houses and grounds occupied by the Eesident Magistrate and the Chief Surveyor at Hokitika were disposed of to Mr Fitzgerald, the land being sold at the upset price, and the houses at a valuation. There was no occupant of the Chief Surveyor's house at the time, and the valuation was made by Mi O'Connor previous to his leaving the service of the County.
