The Petitions Committee of the Provincial Council, to which was remitted the petition of the owners of submerged sections in Greyraouth praying for compensation, has not been able to corns to an agreement, and has recommended that the matter should be referred to a Select Committee. It appears that the Petitions Committee could not unanimously agree to any compensation being given, and it will now remain for some other Committee to take up the petition, unless, what we think is the best thing, some member will move in the Council a resolution affirming that compensation should be granted, and that if this be carried, a Committee could recommend the amount to be given in each case. The amount of the claims, deducting the sum already paid by the General Government, cannot be much altogether, and if it be decided to give land in payment, the simplest plan would be for the Provincial Government to purchase the necessary area and allot it to the claimants. This would save the necessity of Parliamentary legislation, whilst of course the sum paid for the land would come back again into the Provincial treasury. We trust the Council will deal in a fair and liberal spirit with this subject, which is to be discussed on Tnesday next.
