The paddle steamer Charles Edward arrived on yesterday morning's tide from Nelson and Westport, and was to return North last night. The steamer Murray, belonging to the same line, also arrived on the same tide from Hokitikd. The schooner Richard arid Mary, from ■Wellington, was brought to the wharf by the : paddle steamer Titan. She is loaded with material for the railway. The screw steamer Waipara arrived yesterday from Hokitika, bringing the Greymouth portion of the cargo transhipped from the- Alhambra and Tararua. The Thames Naval Brigade Boating Club have determined to send a crew to ' ton to compete next month in the interprovincial gig race, the stakes of which are valued at L3OO. '.■ Captain King, of the cutter Leslie, while recruiting for labor at Aurora, one of the New Hebrides group, was murdered by the natives. They stripped his body and dragged : it into the bush. : ■ ■. ■ The . schooner Mary Eliza, Capt. Douglas, ■has returned to Levuka from a labor cruise, •bringing 65 laborers. : The captain reports that whiie at Ambryn Island he Bawin the possession of the natives a ship's boat, painted white, with mast, sails, and oars, • "which had something like a name painted on the stern. The natives would not allow him " to land, and had fighting pits dug on the beach. He was there some six months, and landed some laborers. ' Each of these had a gun, and on this occasion made use of the- a. — Fijian correspondent of the "New Zealand Herald." In Sydney, a sum of LBOO has been subscribed by mercantile houses to start a Mercantile Rowing Club, and the Government 1 have given a very fine site for a club houße. The club has passed a resolution debarring members f rom rowing for money prizes. - A correspondence between Mr Plimsoll and the Bowd of Trade respecting the La Plata appears in a Parliamentary return pubrlished December 17. Mr Plimsoll forwarded to the Board on the 10th of April last an anonymous letter which he had received, apparently written by an imperfectly educated •person, stating that the La Plata was not seaworthy, as she was overladen with teles'•' graph cable. The Board of Trade refused to - take any action on the anonymous letter otherwise than by cautioning the .owners of the vessel on the subject. Mr Plimsoll states in his letter that the communication in question was the third he had received on the subject, not in the same handwriting, and observes that a working man could only give his name in cases like this with such a risk as he could not afford to incur. The Whampoa, sister ship to the St.Osyth, and, like her, owned by Watts, Milbnm, and Co., was to sail f romLond on on the 28th December on her way to Sydney. The ; Whampoa is in every respect well calculated to aid efficiently in carrying out the «cperixnent so auspiciously commenced by the St. Osyth. As evidence of this it may be stated that she has just made the run home from Calcutta in thirty-two days, the passage from. Suez to Dover being accomplished in thirteen days and a half Her destination is Port Jackson, but she will call in at Port --Phillip to land cargo and passengers. I The Singapore, the fourth steamer built for the route between England and Queensland via Torres Straits, has -just been cumpleted. She sailed from the Clyde on her trial trip on the 17th December, and steamed at the rate of 17 knots. She is an excellent; -'.: specimen of marine architecture, and will doubtless, be found a most useful vessel.
