The San Francisco mail' services appear to.be still, somewhat unsettled, and this very favourite route has been neglected in consequence of the miscarriage to which it has been subjected. It is hoped that by the beginning of the new year it will be so re-organised that it may, in conjunction with mail vid Brindisi, afford a bi-monthly service between England and the colonies. Mr A. Nish, who it will be remembered in connection with Raynor's and other troupes of Christy Minstrels, died after a short illness on the 3rd October. Ever since his return from Australia, some six or seven years ago, he filled the post of musical director to the Moore and Burgess Minstrels, and there is no doubt but his talents and experience tended materially to secure the success they have achieved. The funeral was attended by numerous friends, the members of the troupe singing a dirge by the side of the grave. It is satisfactory to add that the widow of the deceased is left in comfortable pecuniary circumstances. The cause of death is said to have been erysipelas, the result of extracting a sound instead of a decayed tooth: 1 "■■- ■'■■•'• v r "' " -^ - '■'' The Australian gumtree, has been successfully grown by Mr Lascelles, of Mayfield, near Farnhara. The Bow Workhouse committee, reporting on the reference a3 to the expediency of using Australian meat at the workhouses at. Bow and Holloway, stated that pending the final classification of this house, they are of opinion that no alteration should be made in the dietary.
