CHRISTMAS SPORTS IN THE GREY VALLEY.
AHAURA. i There was a more. numerous attendance here than at any previous Christmas gathering, when there was no horse-racing. The first event on Monday was 100 yards Flat Race, in which there were eight competitors. The result was as follows :— William Close, 1 ; William Claughessy, 2. The winner came in easily, but there was a hard struggta for second place.
The second event was a running high jump, for which there were six entries. After a series of trial jumps the competitors were reduced to three— William Olaughessy, William Close, and John Hessey. Hessey caved at 4ft 6in, and a game contest then took place between the two remaining with the following result : — Claughessy, 4ft 9 Jin ; Close, 4ft B|in. Thi3 was remarkably close -and well-con-tested jumping; and the winner received a perfect ovation. , : j
For the Cornish and Devon Wresting there were six competitors: who were; paired as follows :— David Gregg and John Cuilen, John Julian and Thomas Carton, Richard Larkin and P. Dunne. Cuilen, Carton, and Larkin, threw their opponents, and became standards, after a splendid exhibition of scientific wrestling. Carton and Cuilen were then matched, and after a fine display of manly play Carton won the fall and afterwards tackled Larkin, whom he also' threw after a gkllant struggle. The list then stood las follows: — T. 'Carton, 1; R. Larkin, J2 ; J. Cuilen, 3. -' "' ; j By this time it was too late to proceed^ and the; continuation ,of the programme was postponed till the following day.' Just as the bell was ringing on Monday for the entries for the first event, tjhe alarm spread that* the lad Mackay. was drowned, and this unfortunate occurrence necessitated a further postponement until after the funeral. - : ; !:> ;•■•.--■'.■• j : • NAPOLEON HIM., i :. : " j The sports were held here on Boxing Day, and were entirely local in character, and : confined to a few competitors living in the- district. There was, nevertheless, a good deal of fun, and the festivities wound up with a bal masque at Lock's Hotel, in the township, in the .evening. Subjoined are the events : — j .; One Hundred and Fifty Yards Iflat Race — Charles Seymour, 1; William Smithy 2. ■-' T ; Three-legged Racer-Charles Seymour and George Matthews, 1. ,'.:,'■ Running High Jump— Charles Seymour. 1; J. HALF-OUNCE.. . ... :Li J The sports were, as usual> very successful here and well attended.
