BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of the Borough Council was held last night at the Town Hall. Present — the Mayor, Councillors Kerr, Hamilton, Dupre, Moore, Eiaaenhardt, M'Millan, and Acheson. It was moved by Mr Kerr, as Chairman of the Public Works Onminittee, and seconded by Mr Acheson, that the Council authorise the Town Surveyor to fill up a piece of low-lying ground opposite the Fire Brigade Hail, and thereby abate a girafc nuisance in that locality. This was carried. Fines amounting to L 3 10s for offences under the Municipal Corporations Act were received and acknowledged. A letter was received from Butler and Co., asking for a remission of tonnage dues on timber recently landed on the Greymouth wharf, as it was intended for public purposes. Letter received, but it could not be entertained. W. Bishop, Secretary of the Fire Brigade, wrote as to the conditions of the stand-pipes in the front street ; they were blocked up by timber, and the Brigade could not use them in case of fire. Letter referred to Public Works Committee. An application from Messrs Wallace and Holder as to the terms upon which they should give up the lease of. their timber wharf was referred to the Public Works Committee. i A letter was read from the residents in Chapel street, asking for the improvement and extension of that street. It was agreed that as soon as the gravel-pits are disengaged, and the subsidy promised by the inhabitants paid, the Council will undertake the work. Mr M'Gregor w*s granted permission to place a stone crossing in front of his workshop, and to Chaa. White to erect a flagstaff in front of the Great Western Hotel, subject to the approval of the Town Surveyor. Plans for the proposed culvert over the creek at Herbert street, instead of the present bridge, were laid on the table. Ou the motion of Mr Acheson, seconded by Mr Kerr, they were adopted. A tender was read from Messrs Rae and Sewell, offering to supply iron lampposts at L 8 13s each. The letter was received. Mr Moore, by permission, moved— " Thnl in order to give temporary accommodation to cattle vessels arriving at this port, twL' mooring piles be driven near Arney street, and a fence erected to prevent cattle running through the town at all hours, and in order to prevent accidents. He moved the matter should be referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act." Mr Dupre seconded the motion, which was carried, after the Town Surveyor had siated that the work could be done for between L3O and L4O. The Committees of the Council were, after a discussion, re-arranged a 9 follows: — To sign cheques— The Mayor, Messrs Moore, Hamilton, and M'Millan. Finance Committee— The Mayor, Messrs Moore, M'Millan, and Hamilton. v Public Works Committee — Messrs Eissenhardt, Acheson, Kerr, Dupre, and Griffen. Tho Mayor was appointed Chairman of the Finance Committee, and Mr- Kerr Chairman of the Public Works Committee. " ! The sale of the remaining debentures under the loan was referred to the Finance. Committee, with power to act. '; The ; Council adjourned until. Wednesday evening for consideration of the bye* laws.
