Orjß information that the enterprising Chairman of the Paroa Road Board had entrapped the Greenstone candidate is borne out by the fact that we have received a copy of a letter from Mr J. Nicholas, junr., of Greenstone, to the Returning Officer, protesting against the election to be held to-day for the reasons that he was duly proposed and seconded, the Returning Officer raising no objection on the day of nomination and taking a show of hands in his favor. Mr Nicholas makes the further statement (which we give in his own words) that "By representing to me that I was not legally nominated, he induced me to sign a notice of withdrawal on Sunday." It is added that on Monday he withdrew his notice of resignation of the previous day. Another candidate, Mr R. J. C. Taylor, has also lodged a protest for the reasons that his name does not appear on the ballot paper correctly, I thereby causing him to lose the support of many that would have supported him if they had known who the Mr Taylor appearing on the list of candidates really was. We have simply to say that Mr Colton's procedure in these matters is nothing short of disgraceful, and in the interest of the public it is highly to be hoped that stpps will be taken to upset an election which is absolutely irregnlar and illegal. If we were a candidate or an elector we should take very prompt and effectual • steps to teach Mr Cnlton a lesson which he much needs, but as we are not we must leave the matter in the hands of the persons immediately interested.
