THE CHICAGO FIRE.

j The American corespondent, of the ' "Times" telegraphed tbe following ac- : count of the recent disaster at C: iiwg > : — The fire began at five o'nlock in the afternoon of Tuesday, the 14rb July, in a wooden building in Stnte-street, norih of Twe'f'h g ri-'et. This is a^out 400 yar-Js ! west of Lake Michigan. The b>e burnt east to the lake, north to Van Bur^nstreet, about, half a mile wide south by wear. The burnt district extends "esr from the Lake shore, varying Ir^m 200 to 400 yards, and covering sixty acres at the ! northern portion. About ten acres covered the same ground as the great fire of 1871 The bindings dcstioyed are generally wooden and small, not of great value excepting on the lake shore, where th^re are some fine residences and h itels. The chief srrees hurnt are Madison Avenue, Wabnth Avenue, State, Harrison, Van Buren, Tyler, Polk and Peck streets. A in ong the buildings des'rojed are the Post Office, the first Baptist Church, Madison's Avenue Hotel, St. James's Hotel, the Continental Hotel, and the Adelphi Theatre. The fire was checked on the 18th July. Twenty blocks of buildings have been burnt, and the estimated loss is 5,000,000 dollars. Six lives were lost. Renter's telegrams were to the effect that the loss of property caused by the fire in the city is estimated at not less that 4,000,000 dols., and not above 6,000,000 dols. Two-fifths of the property is insured. The whole area destroyed consists of about twenty-five blocks, situated in r,he old park of the city. The limits of the fire are as follows : — ln Clark-street, about as far as Twelfth-street to the South and Polkstreet to the north ; in Dearborn-street to the norih and Po'k-atreet to the south ; in Wabash Avenue and State streets the limits are Harmon-court on the South, and between Van Buren -street on the north.
