There were no arrivals or departures at the port yesterday. The Sprinubok, during her voyage to this port from Newcastle, had a curious companion for a short while in ' the shape of a large sperm whale, which struck up an acquaintance with the barque off the Dromedary. The barque went clean over the sportive mammal, which did not seem at all put about by this style of "leap-frog," but kept playing around and ahead of the vessel for two hours afterwards — "Argus." A very close race has just been concluded by two fine iron clipper shi s, which arrived in port, the one from the Clyde and the from the Mersey, and both having tolerably large deadweight cargoes on board. The Clyde cilpper, the Ben Ledi, left the Clyde on August 1, and to"k her deDarture from Tuskar on Augnst4. The Wasdale— the Liverpool clipper- passed Tuskar on August 2, and both vessels crossed the equator on the same date. August 26, within 40 miles of eath other. The Wasdale gained a day to the Cape of Good FToDe, rounding it on September 18, in lat. 43deg. S., while the B-n Ledi rounded it on September 19. in lat. 45deg. S. The latter, with the exception of two days' easterly winds, had a moderate fair weather passage across she Southern Ocean, and made Cape Otway on Friday last, but the Wasdale had very stormy weather for three or four days, and did not signal Captain Otway until Sunday afternoon. Both ships are regular traders to Melbourne. — "Argus." Several alterations have been made in the s.s. Gothenburg since she was here last, with a view to rendering her more suitable to her especial work — the trade to the Australian Northern Territory. A new saloon, small, but very convenient, has been fitted v > amidships, with sleeping cabins surrounding. Thus the steamer has two saloons, there being the usual one aft. The new one is disposed athwambips, as in the Omeo, instead of fore and aft, as in the other stpamers The bridge also is covered to protect the look-out man from the burning of the Northern Australian coast.
