REPORT OF THE GREYMOUTH LITERARY SOCIETY.
GE2TEBAL. , - In presenting to the members of the Greymouth Literary Society the first annual report of its operations the Committee have first to remark that the anticipations which were indulged in at the commencement of their return to office have not been realised. The calculations which were made at that time of the . success of the society were mainly based upon an estimate of 180 members joining it at the reduced subscription of one guinea per annum. There was also some hope of a subsidy of L5O being granted by - the County Council. In actual fact, however, although the Committee by making a canvas of the town succeeded in enrolling 171 members at the outset, the number fell off after the first six months to 132, whilst the effort of one of the members for Greymoufch to procure A grant from the Provincial Council, wasT unavailing. On the other hand, the Bomugh Council of Greymouth liberally assisted the society with a grant of L3O, and a total sum of LB6 has accrued from six entertainments given on its behalf. - r f ,...v
