MINES OF NOVA SCOTIA.

The Commissioner of Mines has made his report on the year 1873. There were 28 coal mines in working , operation. From these were turned out 1,051; 467 tans of the value of 2,699,347d01. The price in the course of a single twelveaonth rose from 2dol 25c. (free, on board) fco 3d61 50c. The produce has increased from 673,242 tons in 1871 to what we have already mentioned in 1873. The Commissioner calculates that in all probability the output for .'874 will amount to at least 1,250,000t0n5 ; in all likelihood it will be much larger. The chief cohsnrhption was in the home market, but 264,760 tons were exported to :the United States. It is curious to notice that while the United "States exported in 1873 to the West Indies 47,708 tons of coal, of which 36.363 tons were bituminous, or what is produced in Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotians managed to send to the same quarter only 1538 tons, while Great Britain sent during the previous year to these same West Indies 147,997 tons. The gold mining for the year presents no noticeable feature. The yield has been smaller, and the modes of working the mines are still so primitive as to cause, no surprise at the comparatively unsatisfackry results. The yield was 11, 8520z, valued at 219,270d01, from 17,708 tons of quartz. Iron was produced in small quantities. The two iron, works of Acadia and Annapolis wereiokworked continuously, and between .'.■ them produced only 1226 tons of pig metal.: ThVtotal iron produce of- the mines of Nova Scotia in the year> was 3485 tons, of the value of 10,455361.
