[ANGLO-ATJSTRALIAN PRESS TELEGRAPH AGENCY.] Melbourne Oct. 15. The Pera was telegraphed at Adelaide six days before due date, which necessitated the Albion leaving for the Bluff on the same day as the Tararua for Hokitika. Mr Yogel at once arranged with Messrs M'Meckan, Blackwood and Co., who offered every facility, that the Tararua should take the Westland, Nelson, Wellington, Taranaki, Marlborough, and Hawke's Bay mails, and that the mails for Otago and Canterbury should go by the Albion. Mr Yogel also applied to Messrs Bright Bros., who courteously agreed to detain the Hero at Sydney, to allow time for the s.s. Wentworth to carry the Auckland mails. The Hero will probably leave Sydney with those mails late on Saturday evening. Although Mr Thomas Russell has come to an understanding with the New South Wales Government as to the Californian service, it ha 3 not yet been reduced to writing. Mr Russell returns to New Zealand by the Hero. The Macgregor is chartered for the Calif ornian service, and is arranged to call at Auckland for the mails. Mr Yogel remains in Melbourne until the departure of the next mail for Europe. On Tuesday he visited the Assembly during its sitting. M'Culloch's amendment on the Customs duties Bill was disposed of after one night's debate, and rejected by a majority of 20. During the discussion Mr Francis expressed himself opposed to 20 per cent, duties. Mr Francis has resolved to resign his seat for Richmond, and it is stated that Mr Cohen, the Commissioner of Customs, will shortly retire from political life. The agitation is proceeding respecting the opening of museums and picture galleries on Sunday. The subscribers to the Athenaeum have resolved by a large majority against opening that institution on Sunday. Councillor James Gatehouse has been elected Mayor of Melbourne for the ensuing year. Hustler has been committed for trial for the mnrder of his wife. Unsually hot weather is being experienced in all the colonies.. A coach accident has ocurred nearWarnambool. Several passengers were injured ; one severely. The wool sales opened satisfactorily. A shipment of pure Cotswold sheep, for R'isby and Co, of Auckland, has been mad a per Hero. The new steamer Somerset, with the Torres Strait mail, arrived five' days before time. Isabella Carandini was married to Mr Cofcterell at Sydney yesterday. The New Zealand mare Lurline is still much fancied and doing good work. She is well backed for the Cup. The Coch Logon, French corvette, arrived yesterday, en route to New Zealand. Owing to the difficulty of obtaining a suitable site it is unlikely if Blondin will perform here, but will proceed to New Zealand and California. A number of American wool buyers arrived per the Pera. They only left Boston 53 days ago. Macmeckan, Blackwood, and Co. are building two new : steamers, 1200 tons each, on the Clyde, with a guarapteed
speed of 13 knots-, for the Intercolonial trade. Madame Arabella Goddard, who is being enthusiastically received in the large inland towns of Victoria, will positively leave for New Zealand on the. 24th inst. Her agent, R. S. Smythe, is a passenger by the Albion. A meeting of thie creditors of Samuel Macgregor, stock agent and auctioneer, has been called. Liabilities, L 60,000. Sydney, Oct. 14. Governor Robinson has reached Fiji. Letters state that his interview with Oakobau was likely to result satisfactorily. Joseph George, a blind man, has been murdered at Bathurst by a man named Harrison, ' who has been committed for trial. This mail reached California two days late, which detained the City of Melbourne until the 12fch. Adelaide, Oct. 14, The Governor's only daughter, aged three years, has died from the' effects of accidental scalding. ■ The Government scheme for the Murray Railway has been carried.
