The counsel for the plaintiff refused to take evidence on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday next, as the Judge will be otherwise engaged until the sth November, and the Court of Appeal commences on the 9th, after which the Judge proceeds to Napier. I The case is not expected to be resumed before next year. If the plaintiff fails to prove his case, L4O per day demurrage will be claimed by the defendants for every day since the arrest of the ship. In the rules of the forthcoming prize filing, the qualifications for representatives remain the same, though the minimum score is increased : — For cavalry, from 63 to 68 ; for infantry, from 80 to 83 points. The cavalry representatives must be selected by the 12th of December. The first selection of infantry (viz., district or company representatives) by the 21st of Nbvembor, and Colonial representatives by the 19th of December. The number authorised for cavalry is reduced from 7 to 6, and one of the armed constabulary. The number of infantry is reduced from 43 to 36. The present champions have to qualify this year. The Colonial meeting is to take place at the Thames late in January next. For cavalry, there will be an extra match of 10 shots at 300 yards. The 200 yards match is increased from 7 to 10 shots. There are now 62 shots for the cavalry championship instead of 49. In infantry matches for tha championship, the firing is increased from 89 to 114 shots, by the addition of one match of 10 shots at 500 yards, and one of seven shots at five ranges between 200 and 606 yards. "Running" and "rapidity" matches are expugned ; "skirmishing" is retained only. Instead of scoring being by individual, the competitors are to be divided into ' squads, and the prizes (2) will be given to the squads making the highest aggregate scores. There will be two " all comers " matches ; the first for large bore rifles only, second for " any weapon." " Range prizes " have been introduced. Competitors for " district" prizes remain the same ; the cadet piizes are similar to last year ; as are also the prizes offered for artillery aud naval volunteers, for armed constabulary, and for native contingent. Governor Fergusson will visit Adelaide on his way to Europe. Auckland, Oct. 19. The criminal action for libel, brought by Mr Fraser, Resident Magistrate, against the " Star," occupied the Supreme Court all day, and is not concluded. A barbarous murder- has been committed at the pah of Paore. Tuhare, who informed the police, brought out a detective, who arrested the murderer, and brought him to Auckland in a boat. The facts are as follows ;— Henrietta Tepuni was going from one whare to another when a native named Newton called her to go with him to his whare. She at first refused, but eventually went with him some 200 yards from where her friends lived. A girl followed and found them sitting on the sward together, engaged in an angry altercation, the man importuning the woman to marry him, which she refused to. Afterwards the girl heard Newton call out that the woman was dead. The mnrderer was at once seized. The body of the woman was found literally covered with blood. The natives held an inquest, at which they returned a verdict of wilful murder against the accused. Prisoner appears quite unconcerned about his fate. Port Chalmers, Oct. 20. The Southern Cross, from Hobart Town, reports that Lurline is advancing for the Melbourne Cup.
