The representations that have been made to the Postmaster-General on the subject of the desirability of establishing a weekly mail service between Lyell and Zalatown have met with such favorable reception that tenders are already invited for the service. We believe that arrangements have also been made for she appointment of a sub-post-master. With reference to the proposed removal of the Hospital buildings from their present site, we may state that Dr Acheson, as chairman of the local committee, Las received the following telegram from the Superintendent of Westland : — " The Government will only five LlOOO for Hospital buildings. I wish to know the earliest date at which possession can be given. Please inform me on this point." A meeting of the committee will be held this evening at Giliner's Hotel, at eight o'clock, when the question will be discussed. In spite of the heavy rain which fell last evening there was a very good house at the Volunteer Hall, and the efforts made by the Stephenson-Burford Troupe appeared to be highly appreciated by the audience. The first piece was "Miriam's Crime," which was not only well put on the stage, but, speaking generally, was well acted throughout. Miss Stephenson, as "Miriam," certainly played honestly and most effectively, and she was ably sustained by all the members of the Company. Some of the scenes between Messrs Burford "and Hydes were the richest things that have been seen on the Greymoouth stage far a long time, and ought to bear repetition. Mr Thorpe, as Bernard Reynolds, played his part in a quiet gentlemanly mannar, and was frequently applauded, as he very well deserved to be. Mr Hoyle also acted, very ably, and contributed much towards the success of the piece, as its " most respectable solicitor." He has not been long on the stage, but has improved immensely since he was here last, and there is no doubt that he will obtain a good position in his profession. The drama was followed by the burlesque of "Ixion," which was well and heartily played by all the members of the company. We only regret that owing to the lateness of the hour at which the performance concluded, we cannot notice it in detail, as it was one of the finest performances we have seen on the Greymouth stage. The play selected for Miss Stephenson's farewell benefit this evening is " East Lynne," in which the fair beneficiaire takes the part of Lady Isabel, the heroine. To-morrow evening, by special request, " Plot and Passion" will be performed. Mr E. J. O'Conor declined to join the Good Templars, at Westport, but to " show that he had no spite" against them, he has given the water-cure reformers the use of a house rent free in which to hold their meetings. The complete skeleton of a whale is about to be added to the Colonial Museum. It being reported to Dr Hector that the carcase of a whale was lying at Pore Underwood, having been rejected as barren of oil, Captain Pairchild took the Luna round, and got the carcase on board. It proved by no means a pleasant passenger, being decidedly " high," and redolent of perfumes not of " Araby the blest," and ultimately it was landed on the other side of the harbor, that the skeleton might become divested of the malodorous carnal envelope. Stone is being gradually procured from both the Lyell Creek and Oriental claims. The directors of the latter are now confident of being ready for their first crushing by Christmas. Remarkably rich stone was procured in the United Excelsior and Alpine claim from a reef about 3ft thick, on 4th inst. The stone is quite equal to the specimens which ■were procured by Mr Zala some months back and we are informed that the new discovery is from the same part of the mine. More will be known as to the extent of the discovery in a few days. At a recent ploughing match at Selwyn a comb and brush, given by Messrs Wood Bros, Christchurch, was awarded as a pri?e for the worstrgroomed horse, A well-known member of the bar at Wellington, whilst severely cross-examining an applicant for his discharge in the Bankruptcy Court lately, received a very brief, if not satisfactory, reply to some of his inquiries from the insolvent, who, from the " voreign indonation mit vich he spoake de English language," could noc well be mistaken for an Irishman. " What property had you previously to going into business ?" inquired the barrister. "De same as vot I've got now," replied the bankrupt. "Ah ! and what may that be pray ?" continued the legal gentleman. " Notings," quietly responded the questioned individual. The barrister changed the line of inquiry, amidst a general laugh, which was not confined to the floor of the Court, and in which he good-naturedly joined. The " Ross Guardian" reports that on Thursday last, owing to a break in the Company's upper race, the Scotia, Turbine, and Hoskins and.party had to suspend operations.. The injury to the race was caused by a slip, which drove one of the tunnels in. The repairs have now been made. Hunter and party are still driving, but have not yet struck payable gold ; the drive is now about 50ft in length. The Turbine party are moving their tramway to get clear of a reef. Purvis and party are swamped out.
