WRECK OF THE ALICE MAUD. [Anglo-australian press telegraph AGENCY.] Auckland, Sept. 21. Sydney, Sept. 15. The City of Adelaide calls at Levuka this trip, with the outward San Francisco mail, in order to take home the Govein'or's ultimatum on the annexation of Fiji. The Victoria sails for Auckland tomorrow. The Governor sailed for Fiji on Saturday night, accompanied by Messrs De Robeck Hutchinson, the Attorney-Gene-ral, as legal adviser, and German Consul. The Intercolonial gig race has lost its great interest by the illness of Henderson, one of the Victorian crew, formerly of Auckland, compelling an emergency man to take his place. At the drawing for the Ballarat Art Union, the first prize of the value of L2OOO, was won by Mr John Hannon, firmer, Mount Blowhard ; second prize, L 750, by Mr Bray, draper, Geelong. During the discussion in the Assembly on the claims of deceased Civil servants, the Government recognised the desirableness of establishing a life assurance office in connection with the Civil Service. The Legislative Council, by a majority of one, rejected the Government Bills, viz. : — Mersey and Deloraine Railway, Main Branch Roads, Bridges, and other general public works. Much indignatioh is expressed. The South Australian increase of imports shows an excess over exports for the first ' thirty-five weeks of the year, which amounts to nearly three-quarters of a million. The Legislative Council has rejected a Bill to increase the salaries of the clerks of the Assembly beyond those of the Council. The second reading of the Local Court Bill was carried. The Bill extends the jurisdiction of Courts to actions involving sums to the amount of LSOO, and embodies other features of Supreme Court Law Administration. John, Wright Anderson, clerk of the National Bank, pleaded guilty to embezzling LIOO, the property of the bank ; sentence deferred.
