LYELL MINING ITEMS.

[aegus, august 29.]

A rumor reached Lyell yesterday to the effect that rich stone had been found in one of the claims north of the Eight-mile Creek.

The Break-o'-Day began their third crushing on Wednesday, a quantity of their stone having been conveyed to the Little Wonder machine during the previous week. The manager expects to pass through 250 tons of stone. Fourteen men are employed blocking out from No. 4 level, where the leader is looking extremely well. Eight men are employed in the same manner at No. 3 level, from which place stone of equal richness is being procured.

On the conclusion of the crushing now being done for the Break-o'-Day Company, Messrs Carroll and Cairns will operate on a paddock of really first-class stone, which the firm have procured from their claim so justly named the "Little Wonder."

The Maruia Company have again a large quantity of splendid stone to grass, and will crush after Messrs Carroll and Cairns have finished their own stone.

The crushing which was concluded last week on stone from the claim known as Malony's has not proved so successful as the shareholders anticipated. Nothing like so much stone was to grass as was stated, and generally we are informed that the management has been defective. A radical change in this respect has been decided on. When we state that the result was not satisfactory, we speak of the total amount realised as compared with the current expenses. We by no means would be understood to state that the stone was poor, as it gave a of a little under 3oz to the ton.
