THE Grey River Argus. PUBLISHED DAILY TUESD AY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1874.
Parliament was prorogued by the Governor yesterday afternoon. There were only twenty-four members present, very few visitors, and little interest was taken in the proceedings, a mostinglorions ending to a session fraught with such big reoults to the whole Colony. Our late telegrams say that the prorogation speech was longer than usual. The Governor said it was the last occasion he would have the honor of addressing them from that place, but he promised to serve the interests of the Colony as far as his means and opportunities enabled him hereafter. He anticipated great benefits to the Colony from the State Forests Act. He regretted the length of the session, which did not enable them to deal with the question of promoting commercial intercourse with Polynesia. Attention would be given to the re-establishment of the Californian service in conjunction with New South Wales. He considered the Session memorable for the decisive step in the direction of abolishing Provincial Government in the North Island. He hoped the Provincial Governments would loyally recognise the decision of the House of Representatives, and exert themselves to so manage the affairs of the Provinces, as to enable the projected change to be effected next year, with the least possible inconvenience.
