CORONER'S INQUEST.
An inquest was held, at the Court House, Ahaura, r on : Wednesday,,' 26th August, . before C. Whitefoord, Esq., Coroner, touching the death of Charles Lorenzen, who was accidentally killed at Callaghan's Creek that morning. A jury having been sworn, of whith. Mr Andrew Nicol was chosen foreman, they ;proceed to view the body. The following witnesses were then examined :— " /'' ■■'' George Cole said he was partner of the deceased. They worked in '■ separate claims, but on the morning of the 26th the deceased came to witness's " l claim! r ' to assist him to shift a horse, Lorenzen was nearest the face at which they were sluicing, '..' which was from . ,15; to ,2pft in height. - The'witness was further, out, repairing the hose, when he noticed the face giving way, and, a large fall of earth took place, striking .. Lorenzen on the head and back with ' great violence, and knocking, him iidown, partially burying him. He went towards: him, but seeing ; a large cut , over the left tern pie,; in fact the skull was , split jong^ and ascertaining- that he was quite dracl, the witness went for assistance: to-recover the body. ■ ■ ■ • :.i C. W. Jones said that on Wednesday morning, about 8 o'clock he met Cole, who told him of the accident. Went to the place and saw the .: deceased in the paddock. He was quite dead, ; the skull over the left temple being smashed, and the brain ; protruding. The ground was very bad to stand, : being of the description that falb in large masses/without giving the slightest warning. -The witness stated that he had cautioned the. owners of the claim that they were in danger all the time, and to be very careful. Charles. Greatorex deposed to assisting to extricate the body/ and he had know the deceased- for five years. He was a native oi Schelswig-Holstein, and about 40 years of age. • Be had no relations in New Zealand. ' Dr Phillips described the injuries the deceased had sustained. There was a contused wound on the temple, six inches in length, along ; the scalp. : : The skull" was completely broken through, and a portion of the brain was gone. Death must have been almost instantaneous. "., "..'-"- . The jury returned a. verdict that .the deceased came by his death through earth falling on him at Callaghan Creek on 26th August, .1874. , The funeral of? the deceased was numerously attended, most of the i residents of Callaghan andAbaura, with ainumber of miners who were in town from Half.Ounce and Noble's Creeks following the remains to the Ahanra Cemetery. The Rev. T. Flavell conducted • the-funeral service at the grave. - ; . .
