The Assembly met yesterday, when Mr Kerford detailed the circumstances of the ministerial reconstruction, and stated that he would follow the policy of the last administration, but did not intend to send a Reform Bill to the Upper House. A Bill would, however, be submitted early next session, and the present session would be brought to a close as soon as possible. The statement was not received with much favor. Mr Langton then explained his reasons for withdrawing from the Government, the principal of which was the disagreement between himaelf and Mr Casey on the question of expenses for journeying about the country, which he declined to sanction, and a general expose was afforded to the House, which subsequently formed the subject of debate in Council. Sir Francis Murphy and others severely censured the action of the Government in illegally putting in office the Chief Secretary with commission. The Ministerial prospects are not bright, and the tariff question is likely to prove troublesome. Frederick Roch has been sentenced to death at Beaufort for a murder committed ten years ago. A boy six years of age has committed suicide near Woodonga by shtoting himself, because he was threatened to be given in charge for theft. Robert Rice, mate of the Bhip Oakworth, charged with making a false entry in the log, was discharged. In the Filgate v. Thomson libel case, a verdict was given for the plaintiff for ! twenty pounds. Over L4OOO was netted at the last spring meeting by the racing club. At the meeting of the Tookey Company, opposition was offered to any increase of the capital at present, or to any mortgage of the property that might have the effect of making the shareholders liable to the New Zealand Government for their share of the proposed loan. The meeting adjourned to give time for con-
sideration of the position of the company. Madame Goddard will shortly visit New Zealand. The cable between Singapore and Batavia has been interrupted three days, and is now restored. - . ... ■ Mr Redwood's horses arrived yesterday in fine order. The brig Ellen Norres is lost on the coast of New Caledonia ; crew saved. Adelaide, Aug. 5. Ross, the leader of Elder's Exploration Committee, has returned to Strangway's Creek, and is expected" to reach Stuart's Creek by Saturday.
