[Anglo-australian press telegraph AGENCY.] Westport, Aug. 12. A meeting was held last night in re the turning of the first sod of the railway. Opinion is in favor of the Mayor performing the ceremony. Mr Vogel's Provinces Abolition Resolutions are well received, and general regret is felt that does not include this portion of the South Island. Auckland, Aug. 12. The City Council has resolved to proceed with the water supply works according to Mr Moriarty's proposals. The plans are prepared by Mr Errington, C.E. Tenders will»be called for early. Hokitika, Aug. 12. At the cattle sale to-day, beef averaged 37s 6d per 1001 b ; mutton, 4£d. Wellington, Aug. 12. A telegram, dated London, July 31, was received to-day from the AgentGeneral announcing that during the month the the following ships sailed for the Colony :—Star of India, with 370 imgrants, for Wellington ; Bebbington, and Denny, with 580, for Napier ; Zelandia, and Jackson, with 640, for Auckland ; Chile, with 220, for Nelson ; Duke of Edinburgh, with 340, for Lyttelton and Invercargill; Jessie Redmayne, with 720, for Otago. The following railway plant material was despatched during July : — Six locomotives, eight carriages, 700 tons rails, and 260 tons of bridge work.
The German Marine Force includes a body of naval sharpshooters, all of whom are picked marksmen. The Chief of the Admiralty has ordered these men to be regularly practiced in firing with their improved needle rifles at objects on the land, or floating on the water, while the vessel is in motion, the men being placed on the masts or at other convenient points. '
