The resignation of Mr W. BLash of his seat at the Board was received^ and accepted. The, Secretary, : who >is' also Treasurer, reported that he"' had* made repeated application to the Govern . ment for money, as instructed by "the 1 Board, but he had. not received^.satisfactory reply. The creditors or the Board were pressing, and if relief did not come immediately, all work would have ; to be stopped. ; A discussion [ took i place luppn^ the action of the Government in placing the Board, as; it were, under ithe ; supervisiod ,pf the ; Provincial ;Engineer?s; department. During the discussion,; the? conduct of the Government was severely 1 criticised, and at length the following; rasolution was proposed by Mr Cunningham—" That the Board regrets the action taken by the Government in Jugulating., the supplies of money to be paid to" the account of the Board, by the report of. the Provincial Engineer, instead of subsidising the Boardldirectly y wifck^ moneSr specified as its revenue by the Act of tne w Provincial Council/cdriatitiitingthe Board, aud that the members of the Board, feeling they are placed in a false position by the action oorf r the r Government, hereby give notice, and instruct the Secretary to communicate such notice to the Govern-; ment, that, aj;; the;, next meeting; 'of &| Board, on Tuesday] Ist 'September, tlwy" will be prepared f to. h>nd overs t$ jjhe Auditor appomt&d iby^'lihe/; Government all books, aooourite, and etfectß, now held
by the Board. Seconded by Mr Alookn, and carried "unanimously. The contents of the resolution was at once telegraphed to the Government by the Secretary. The Chaibman, with: the permission of the Board, withdrew 1 the motion standing in His name with preference to an assessment and levying a rate. Mr Alcorw moved that the Chairman telegraph to the Provincial Treasurer that the liabilities of the Board to date are L 556, and requesting L6ootopay off the liabilities of the Board previous to the resignation of the members. Seconded by Mr Stanhope and carried. A motion was proposed by Mr Stanhope, that the Chairman take the necessary steps to give full publicity of the days of nomination and polling: for the election of a member to succeed Mr Lash. Seconded by Mr Cunningham and carried. The requisite notice has since been given, and the election is fixed to take place on Monday, August 24. After discussing a variety of matters, all relating to works urgently required, but impossible of performance, owing to the corporate impecuniosity of the Board, the meeting was adjourned to the Ist of September.
