John M'Leod, a Justice of the Peace, and formerly member of the Assembly, before whom informations had been sworn, deposed, in reply to questions by the Judge, that he would not put much faith in Macfarlane's sworn testimony, as his knowledge of him, both commercially and politically, led him to believe Macfarlane to be a dangerous man. The case is not yet concluded. Christchurch, July 22. A largely attended public was held last night to protest against the erection of the Canterbury College in the domain. The following resolutions was passed by an overwhelming majority—" That this meeting protests against the manner in which the Canterbury Domain Amendment Bill was brought into Parliament, and passed through to the the third reading, in the face of the fact that petitions were being signed against the measure, and without any opportunity being given for those petitions to be presented, and that a petition to the Legislative Council, embodying the above resolution, be signed on behalf of the meeting by the Chairman, and immediately forwarded for presentation. It was stated during the meeting that that the petition to the General Assembly was signed by 1000 persons, and that the petition to the Legislative Council was already signed by 800 persons.
