A petition has been prepared and signed by nearly all the engineers and engine-drivers, praying the Hous'e;of Re-. presentatives to insert a clause in the Bill for the prevention of mining and boiler accidents, limiting the hours of labor of the rlrivpra lo eight hours. They state that such a clause is actually necessary to prevent accidents occurring through the fatigue and exhaustion of drivers from long hours, being twelve hours shifts at many batteries. Wellington, July 17. Messrs Brogden and Sons have deter^ mined to abandon the Patterson, as she now lies on the Waitara bar. She is insured against total loss in the followine offices :— South British, L2OOO ; NewZeaLISOO ; Victoria, LIOOO ; National, LSOO — total insurance, LSOOO. Her value was L 13,500. The underwriters will probably make some effort to save her. July 18. It is proposed to form a co-operative butchery establishment in consequence of the rise in meat. • . Wanganui, July 18. The Resident Magistrate has decided that a billiard-room connected with a hotel may be kept open all night. Dunedin, J uly 18. The new Colonial Bank ; has secured the services of Messrs Beal and Warren, long known in connection with the Bank of New Zealand. It is understood that Mr A. W. Morris will also join the new bank. Auckland, July 16. William Bartley, barrister, son of Mr Bartley, formerly Speaker of the Legislative Council, has been found in an outbuilding of his residence at Woodside, with his brains blown out by a doublebarrelled gun, which had been inserted in his mouth. It is supposed to have been the result of depression of spirits from the expectation of another attack of asthma, under which he suffered greatly. Auckland, July 18. J. S. Macfarlane has entered an action for damages for LIOOO against Harris, junr., for alleged malicious prosecution ; to be heard on Tuesday. Port Chalmers July 18. Arrived — Immigrant ship, Sussex, seventy-five days, from Gravesend, with 375 souls, all well. This week we have received 3500 immigrants by four ships — the Caroline, Hindostan, Cartoburn, and Sussex. The Sussex spoke the Hereford, from London to Canterbury, on the 13th May, in about : latitude ten north, and left her behind. Charleston, July 18. The p.s. Result arrived here at two o'clock this morning, and getting broadside on to the beach she grounded and started , the garboard streak amidships. Water was up to the cabin floor in ten minutes. The cargo not being perishable is scarcely injured.
