THE STATE OF THE MARSDEN ROAD.

[to the editor.] : i Sik— Will you kindly allow me space for a few remarks concerning tha state of the road between this town and Marsden, which is at present in a very bad condition, so bad that it is almost impassable, and the contractors for. the repairs,^., of this portion of the road have done, as yet, little or nothing towards carrying on their work, although three weeks have now elapsed, and their contract specified only one week. Had the time 'specified been longer,, there would have been more tenders for the work, and it would consequently have been done cheaper, r and, perhaps, more effectually ; the only thing that stopped many from tendering, !; was: the short time allowed. It seemed -to me, to say the least, strange that tKiSj should be allowed, and it is also a curious' fact that the contractor for the repairing, &c, is the same i who had a. contract, f or forming ; a section 1 of this same r'6ad'.' ; ' '^.nd I cannot but think, "that, the engineer in charge must be greatly to blame in this matter, being, as I am led to believe, cognisant •of the state of affairs. ; The; coaches seldom travel; this piece of rp.ad. without some accident happening, and I did think- that ere this the road would have been in a fair state when I heard of the contract being let. ": ' As ydu.knbw, sir, the mail coach is bound to time, ; and" it becomes a serious thing when the mail is delayed day after day, both to. the. public and myself, as coach proprietor. |r : ■ • ■ I hope, sir, that :these few lines will be the means of hurrying on the contractors with 'their work;- :^^]'' '['.■'■ '',J : '^ '. ... „: „.
