The s.s. Kennedy and Waipara run up from Hokitika yesterday afternoon, and came in easily. The channel is good, although narrow, and contains plenty of water. The Waipara brought the Greymouth portion ot the Taiarua's cargo from Melbourne, and the Kennedy a quantity of cargo transhipped ex Sea Bird, from Melbourne. The Waipara leaves for Hokitika at 11 am to-day.
The B.s. Alhambra is expected to arrive "here to-morrow, from .Nelson, when she will : be despatched with passengers for Melbourne direct. '-.*' '•The port light at the Hokitika signal station has been fitted with gas in lieu of kerosene, and it is expected that the chanae 'will be advantageous to vessels, as the light thereby secured will be far more "biilliant. At present the fittings are more experimental than otherwise, but; if the new light answers as well as is expected gas will be permanently
laid on.
